The sustainability of plastics and their integration into a circular economy model were at the centre of the roundtable debate organised by Plásticos Universales/Interempresas Media and sponsored by Equiplast on 2 July. The event brought together key stakeholders from across the value chain: recyclers, converters, raw material manufacturers and distributors, equipment suppliers, and industry associations. The discussion highlighted that plastic recycling requires a structural transformation in which all links of the system cooperate under principles of transparency, innovation, and shared responsibility.

The roundtable was chaired by Ibon Linacisoro, Director of the Industrial Division at Interempresas and of the magazine Plásticos Universales, and featured contributions from:

  • Alicia Martín, Managing Director of Plastics Europe Iberia
  • Óscar Hernández, Managing Director of Anarpla
  • Natalia Campos, CEO of Enplast
  • Judit Jansana, General Manager of Tomra Sorting
  • Javier Pérez Puig, Chief Operating Officer and Partner at Wursi
  • Xavier Ribera, Head of Sustainability and Communications at BASF Spain
  • Diego Valverde, Technical Director of Luiso
  • Adrián Sánchez, Country Manager at Ultrapolymers.

Conclusion: a committed chain, but not yet self-sufficient

Plastic recycling is making progress, but it still faces technical, regulatory, and economic challenges. The industry demonstrates commitment, innovation, and a willingness to collaborate, but it requires institutional support, political consistency, and a public narrative grounded in data. A truly circular plastics economy will only be possible with shared responsibility across industry, government, consumers, and technologists.
